Re: Build your own Gaming Laptop! - DIY eGPU

nice thread TS

Thanks! Hoping that this would really pick up the interest of many upgraders/modders here.

I think the only thing preventing a lot of us here is the lack of an eGPU adaptor reseller in the Philippines. Kulitin niyo na si Hotgadgets!

Medyo bitin yung nilista mong laptop specs kaya napa-research pa ako. :slap:

Acer Aspire 5733 - Mobile Intel HM55 Express Chipset

Sa Chipset na Series-5, mataas pa rin yung chance na gagana yung eGPU, but only for x1.opt or x2.

See the eGPU table of Chipset Compatibility. It also shows which kind of GPU is advised for your Chipset (NVIDIA Fermi/Kepler)

Very device specific ang pag setup ng eGPU so don't expect me to be able to guide you 100%.

  • May whitelist ang mPCIe slot/s mo (need hacked bios to remove whitelist)

Dahil malaki screen mo, suggest ko mag single PCIe 1.0 lane with Optimus compression (x1.opt). Higher risk for incompatibility.

Yung medyo sulit na GPU for PCIe 1.0 is a GTX460 or GTX 560Ti.

May problem siya sa pag boot for systems with >2Gb RAM.

Solution is to use 2Gb RAM only (not ideal for gaming), or do a DSDT override.

Sana po nakatulong.

Re: [TUTORIAL] DIY eGPU - ULTRA SETTINGS on a Non-Gaming Lap

Good News eGPU enthusiasts!

With the announcement of the new Maxwell GPU lineup (Next Gen NVIDIA video cards), we can now have the absolute portable gaming setup!

The GTX880, NVIDIA's top-performing Maxwell GPU will be using a GK204 chip, and will only draw power as much as a GTX680 (195W)

It's great because our eGPU setup using the AC adapter-powered EXP GDC or PE4C 2.x can supply enough power to run it (up to 220W)

This announcement is very timely and lucky for eGPU enthusiasts. I will personally (save up) buy this as soon as it arrives.

My reasons for this purchase are the following:

1. Future proofing my Gaming Rig
Just like a desktop gaming enthusiast, having the most updated graphics card will guarantee you the best performance for games and graphics processing tasks.
Update: SLI (GPUs chain-linked together) was successfully implemented in an eGPU rig! The future looks VERY bright for notebooks.

2. Not powerful enough? Use a new Thunderbolt 2 adapter (or better) for full GPU maximization
One might argue that using the best GPU in an eGPU setup will surely bottleneck in performance thus making the upgrade too expensive or useless. While it's true that the limited bandwidth on a mobile PCIe slot will definitely bottleneck and result to a sub-optimal experience, I personally feel that 50% power of an uber card is still better than 100% power of a so-so midrange card.

The triumph however is reserved for users with Macbooks, and Thunderbolt2 notebooks (TB1 = x2.2, TB2 = x4.2) because having the best GPU here will give you almost 100% performance -- the 20GT/s (16GT/s real time) bandwidth from TB2 almost sees no bottleneck.

For those itching for a GPU upgrade, you can buy the card now as one time investment, and when you finally upgrade to a notebook with larger bandwidth ports (I intend to wait for TB3), just transfer the GPU to a compatible adapter and enjoy.

3. Can be "retired" to a Desktop PC if your notebook is already slowing down
If you feel that your GPU is just too powerful for the power of your notebook, you can always run the option of placing the GPU in a desktop and using it for what it was originally meant for.

4. Very minimalistic setup allows for an easy, portable experience with the best graphics available at that time
Of course the main reason for the purchase will be to maximize the graphics processing power of the most powerful cards in a very compact setup. An 8Gb GDDR5 RAM dedicated for Graphics Processing is surely overkill for now, and can handle the most complex of graphics computations in the years to come.

Hope this helps a lot guys.

dati nagreresearch ako tungkol dito sabi di possible..

Good luck!

mga magkano naman po kaya eGPU?
