Re: ► [GUIDE] BlackBerry Tips and Tricks ◄

.

Today I bring you five advanced keyboard tricks for your smartphone that enable you to switch directly from one active application to another without returning to your home screen--just like the ALT + TAB function on your Windows PC--reboot your device without removing your battery and more.

Each tip takes only a second or two to learn and put to use, and they'll save precious time, provide valuable information about your device and even free up your internal memory to make your smartphone run faster and more smoothly.

(Note: We've tried all these shortcuts on BlackBerry Curve, Bold and 8800 series devices, but we can't guarantee they'll all work on older RIM smartphones.)

Rapidly Switch Back and Forth Between BlackBerry Applications

The most basic way to switch from one BlackBerry app to another is to repeatedly hit the ESCAPE key while inside a program until you to get back to your icon screen. From there, you'd scroll your track ball or wheel to find the next app you want and then click to launch it.

A quicker and more efficient way to go from an active program to another program is to use a shortcut. While inside an application, hold down the ALT key--which is directly below the letter A key--and then click ESCAPE--the button with an arrow reversing directions and to the right of your trackball on 8000 series devices. While holding down ALT, you can then scroll left or right between apps, and you need only release the ALT key to select a program.

BlackBerry Curve Keyboard

You need to be working in a specific application for that app to be available via the shortcut--in other words, the program needs to have been opened recently or still running. You can always access your Home Screen, BlackBerry browser, Options, Call Log, Messages and a few other apps depending on your device settings.

View Event Log Details, Free Up Memory by Clearing the List

Your BlackBerry's Event Log displays your system's recently run events and processes. If you're experiencing a problem with your BlackBerry or having an issue with a specific application or service, information from the Event Log can be helpful for troubleshooting. And it can be a good BlackBerry hygiene to clear out the log, to keep your device running smoothly.

BlackBerry Event Log

To access your Event Log, go to your Home Screen, hold down the ALT key and then type "LGLG." The Event Log will then appear, and you can click a specific event for more information or hit your BlackBerry MENU key more options. The MENU key has seven dots in the shape of the letter B, and it's found directly to the left of BlackBerry devices with trackballs. You can copy event information using the MENU key and tailor your settings to log only specific types of events.

You can also free up some valuable device memory to help your device run faster by clearing your Event Log. To delete your list of events, hit the BlackBerry MENU key while any event is highlighted and then click "Clear Log." A dialogue box will then pop up asking if you're sure you want to delete the log. Once you confirm the deletion, your log will be cleared. (Don't worry, if your IT department is running device management software along with its BlackBerry Enterprise Server, your company likely has its own record of this event log.)

Reboot Your BlackBerry Without Removing the Battery

Any experienced BlackBerry user knows that it's occasionally necessary to reboot your device after installing a new app, to solve performance problems, refresh your smartphone's memory or fix other minor issues. One way to do so is to remove your battery door and pull the power pack. After the battery is returned to the device, your BlackBerry reboots. This gets the job done, but it's time consuming to power down the device and then remove and replace the battery--and your battery door won't fit as snuggly if you're constantly taking it off.

The quickest and easiest way to reboot is via another BlackBerry keyboard shortcut. To reboot, simply hit ALT, RIGHT SHIFT and DELETE. The RIGHT SHIFT key is found on the bottom right corner of the BlackBerry keyboard and DELETE key is also on the right hand side and has the letters "DEL" on its face.

After pressing these three keys in tandem, your device powers down, your LED indicator turns red for a few seconds and the reboot process commences.

Change Your Signal Strength Display from Bars to Numbers

Most modern cell phones offer up some form of the "five-bars" to display users' wireless signal strength, and the BlackBerry default mode is no different. But if you want more precision than bars can offer, you can change to the numeric signal strength display mode.

The numeric mode shows wireless signal strength in decibels per milliwatt (dBm), a ratio measured power in decibels (dB), referenced to one milliwatt (mW).

To switch from bars to numbers, navigate to your BlackBerry home screen, hold the ALT key and enter in "NMLL." The signal display will then automatically display a dBm value. In general, a reading from -45 to -85 is considered very strong. Any reading that's lower than -85--for instance, -100--is weaker. To switch back to bar mode from numeric, just hit ALT again and retype "NMLL."

The numeric display can be helpful to determine specifics on how much a wireless signal degrades as you move from place to place. (It's also geek chic to read your cellular signal strength in dBm instead of boring old bars.)

Bring Up "Help Me" Screen for Device, System Data

Your device's Help Me screen displays useful device and system information like your vendor ID, BlackBerry platform version, OS version, PIN, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number (which identifies your GSM device for the telecom carrier), cellular signal strength, free and total available memory and more. Most of this information can be found in various locations throughout your BlackBerry Options, but the Help Me offers a simple way to access all the data on a single screen.

To pull up the Help Me screen, navigate to your home screen and then press ALT, either SHIFT key and the letter H. To return to your Home Screen, hit ESCAPE or open the MENU and select Close.

7 steps to keep your RIM Blackberry healthy and happy

7 steps to keep your RIM Blackberry healthy and happy

Your Blackberry device is just like your PC and behaves exactly like it. Storing more and more data on your device can reduce its performance and slow it up considerably. Here is a list of things that you can do to keep your Blackberry device up and running at optimum health.

1. Delete all Unnecessary Applications: You might have installed more applications than you actually need on your Blackberry device. Your Blackberry would run faster and perform better if you keep only those applications that you actually use.

2. Delete all Unimportant text and email messages: Having old and unimportant text and email messages on your device can consume too much space and memory. Therefore it is good idea to delete such messages from your device.

3. Make use of Content Compression to free up space and memory: Your Blackberry comes with a feature called "Content Compression". You can use it to compress all your Blackberry data including messages, contacts, calendar entries, tasks, and memos and free up memory.

4. Get rid of your multimedia junkies: Multimedia files such as music and video files take up too much space and memory. Therefore it is a good idea to move them to an external memory card such as a micrsoSD card or delete them regularly from your device.

5. Optimize your Calendar appointment settings: The Blackberry Calendar stores a lot of information such as past appointments, meetings and other events. Therefore it is a good idea to adjust calendar settings to keep only the most up to date data. If your calendar stores important data and you don't want to get rid of, then it is a good idea to backup your data before deleting it.

6. Clear your Event Log regularly: Just like your PC, the blackberry device keeps log of all events and processes running on it. With time this log can grow considerably in size and take up too much space and memory. Therefore it is good idea to clear your Event Log regularly.

7. Clear your Browser's Cache regularly: Your Blackberry web browser keeps information of all sites that you visit in its cache. Clearing it regularly can result in better performance.

Unlock Code Instructions for BlackBerry Cell Phones for All Networks

UPDATE:
If you don't see your phone model below, please refer to these links :

In this guide I will show you how to enter unlock codes into your BlackBerry cell phone so that it will be unlocked from your current provider such as SUN,SMART, GLOBE. etc.
First you need an unlock code of course. If you don't have an unlock code yet, you can get/request here :

No cable or software needed! Just enter the code that you will receive and you'll have an unlocked BlackBerry cell phone! Unlocking by entering a code on your phone's keypad is called "Unlock by IMEI". Indeed, it is the most convenient way to unlock your cell phone.

Below are instructions that work for most network providers. Some unlock codes, such as those for T-Mobile locked cell phones, have to be entered differently and are shown at the end.

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry 8800 and 8800 Pearl:

  • You must have a SIM card in your phone to complete these steps (can be active or inactive)
  • Go to settings menu => and then Options.
  • Select Advanced options => and then Sim card
  • Type MEPD using your Blackberry keyboard (NOTE: You will not see any text appear on the screen while typing MEPD)
  • Hold the ALT Key while typing in MEPE on your Blackberry keyboard (NOTE: You will not see any text appear on the screen while typing MEPD)
  • You should be presented with a prompt "Enter Network MEP Code". Type in the 16 or 8 digit unlock code and press in the track wheel / jog dial to confirm
  • Your phone is now unlocked

How to Enter Unlock Codes on T-Mobile BlackBerry 8230 Curve:

  • Press the Menu key.
  • Scroll to and select Manage Connections.
  • Select Turn All Connections Off.
  • Press the red end key or the Escape key to go back to the Home screen
  • Scroll to and select the Options icon.
  • Scroll to and select Advanced Options.
  • Scroll to and select SIM Card.
  • Type MEPD Note: When typing in MEPD the letters will not appear on the screen. This step opens up the personalization on the device.
  • Hold down the Alt key and type in MEP2. Note: When typing in MEP2 the letters/number will not appear on the screen. This Step opens up the Enter Network MEP code box.
  • Enter the unlock code.
  • Press the trackball (code accepted should display).
  • Press and hold the red End key to turn the handheld off and then back on.
  • Once the device has powered on, follow steps 1 & 2 and select Restore Connections.

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry Curve:

You must have a SIM card in your phone to complete these steps, I have found that this procedure works best with an AT&T or Cingular Sim card in the phone (can be active or inactive ). Make sure the phone is not displaying the low battery warning!
  • Power on
  • Go to settings
  • Go to advanced options
  • Go to sim card
  • Type MEPD
  • Type MEP[Alt + 2] (all this with either a cingular or ATT SIM inside)
  • It will ask you for the unlock code
How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry 8100 and 8100 Pearl:

  • Go to Options Menu => Advanced Options
  • In the SIM Card menu, hold down the shift (right of the zero, cap) press meppd
  • You'll see the unlocking level screen there you hold the ALT key (left side below @) type mepp2 (*You won't see any text while you are typing either one of these.)
  • Type in the 16 or 8 digit unlock code.
or
  • Insert SIM into device
  • Power phone on and Turn off the radio (Turn Wireless Off option) VERY IMPORTANT.
  • Select "Options" THEN SELECT ADVANCED OPTIONS
  • Scroll down and select "SIM Card"
  • Type "MEPPD" (please note that you will not see what you type on the screen)
  • Type "MEPP then [ALT BUTTON] then "2" (please note that you will not see what you type on the screen)
  • Enter the Unlock Code
  • Press enter
  • Reboot device. Device is now unlocked.

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry 8700 and 8700c:

You must have a SIM card in your phone to complete these steps, I have found that this procedure works best with an AT&T or Cingular Sim card in the phone (can be active or inactive ). Make sure the phone is not displaying the low battery warning!

  • Go to settings
  • Go to options
  • Go to advanced options
  • Go to sim card
  • Type MEPD (not case sensitive) (you will not see text appear on screen while typing)
  • Does it say Network active? if so your phone is locked
  • Hold the ALT Key while typing in MEPE (not case sensitive, and you will not see text appear on screen while typing)
  • It will say "Enter Network MEP Code, Type in the 16 or 8 digit unlock code and press in the jog dial to confirm.
  • Your phone is now unlocked

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry 7100 (7100v etc):

Warning! The Wireless Mode MUST BE OFF before performing the given SIM Unlock instructions in order to avoid causing the device from becoming defective.

How to turn Wireless Mode Off:

  • Scroll to the Airplane Icon (Turn Wireless Off.)
  • Press Select.
  • Wireless Mode will turn off.
  • REMOVE the SIM card
  • Power On the Device (Put the Battery back in)
How to SIM Unlock the device:

  • Go to the "Tools" screen
  • Select "Settings"
  • Select the "SIM Card" option
  • Type MEPPD
  • It should then display a list "SIM, Network, Network Subset, etc..."
  • To select "Network" type MEPP Alt-2
  • It should then ask for the code
  • Enter the unlock code

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry 6xxx 7xxx: ie 6230, 7100, 7290 etc.:

  • Select Options menu on BB.
  • Now you select SIM CARD menu. To be able to see this you have to type this on the keypad on phone : (TEXT WILL NOT APPEAR ON THE SCREEN until you enter the unlock code)
  • Type 'MEPD' for all models except 7100 in which case in case use 'MEPPD'.
  • Usually you should see "active" NET lock. Now in order to disable this lock type 'MEP2' respectively 'MEPP2' if phone is 7100 and will appear a dialog asking for code. NOTE: You must use the "alt" or "shift" key to enable numbers so example would be: m-e-p-"alt key"-2.
  • Now you should see the place to enter your net unlock code. (if not, you didn't type in mep2 or mepp2 properly.)
  • Here you must enter the "NET Unlock Code" that the bb unlocker showed you and hit return.

How to Enter Unlock Codes on T-Mobile BlackBerry Cell Phones:

  • On the Home screen, click the Tools icon. The Options screen appears.
  • In the tools screen, select the Settings icon.
  • Scroll to SIM Card and select it. You should see the phone number and the SIM ID number.
  • Type ‘mepd’ to display the first five levels of SIM locking.
  • T-Mobile uses network locking so the Network should display Active. All other states should display Disabled. Please note: For the Blackberry 7100t you will hit the “P” twice when entering the ‘mepd’ and ‘mep2′ for steps 4 & 5.
  • Type ‘mep2′ to display the dialog box asking for the unlock code (Press the Alt + 2 key to get the number 2)
  • Input the Network Unlock code
  • Press ENTER and reboot handheld.

How to Enter Unlock Codes on T-Mobile BlackBerry 8100 Cell Phones (alternative instructions if above instructions do not work):

  • Can be done without a sim card inserted.
  • While on the home screen, click the “blackberry key” on keyboard, then select “options”.
  • Choose “Advanced Options”.
  • Select “Sim Card”
  • There is no area to type these letters, you just type them as instructed. No need to hit keys twice to get a letter either. Type meppd to display the first five levels of SIM locking. Most companies use network locking so the Network should display Active. All other states should display Disabled (you will not see text appear on screen while typing)
  • Type mepp2 to display the dialog box asking for the unlock code (Press the Alt + 2 key to get the number 2) ( you will not see text appear on screen while typing )
  • Input the SIM Unlock code
  • Press in the trackball once
