How To Upgrade Your BlackBerry OS Software

BBDM_PC.jpg

What you’ll need:

Desktop Manager (free 200-300 MB download)
Handheld software (free 100+ MB download)
Time (about two hours, counting download, device backup, and installation)

1. Download Desktop Manager
Desktop Manager is the software that lets your BlackBerry talk with your PC or Mac. As of writing this, the Mac version is still in its early development, and isn’t as smooth as the PC version for upgrading BlackBerry software.

Make sure to delete the vendor.xml file so that your software is carrier agnostic and you aren’t tied to any specific official updates. We can assume that if it’s good enough for one carrier, it’s good enough for all. You can find the vendor.xml file in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.

2. Download handheld software

The only thing to really keep in mind when downloading the software proper for your device is that it needs to be for your model. As stated above, be sure to check Options>About in order to check your device model number. The source doesn’t matter so much, just make sure to delete the vendor.xml file. Below, you’ll find some of the latest software as of January 12th, 2010.

3. Install handset software

Now that you’ve installed the Desktop Manager and Handheld software, you’re good to go. If you’re a Mac user, you can use the device update feature in the software, but you aren’t going to be able to roam between carriers and get the latest software. As of writing this, it’s still better to be on a PC, or use a virtual Windows service like BootCamp. Double click on the .exe Handheld Software file and install it to your PC.

Plug in your BlackBerry via USB, launch the desktop software and Desktop Manager should detect that your device is able to be upgraded. Just follow the wizard that pops up, and the Desktop Manager will back up all of your contacts and emails, wipe your device, install the new operating system, and restore your data from backup. Keep in mind this process will reset many of your applications, so you might have to put in activation keys and the like back in once everything’s done.

Eto ngayon ang trick .. para sa mga prepaid version ng blackberry:

Mag create muna kayo ng backup ng files nyo kasi mabubura yun laman ng blackberry nyo pag nag update kayo!

I connect ang blackberry via USB sa PC.
Run Desktop Manager and let it connect to your device.

You can do an update without an active subscription by doing a "stealth" OS reload.

Delete the Vendor.xml file located at c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

Run Loader.exe from that directory. ( hanapin ang Loader.exe then double click)

Then Next next lang.

Pull the battery from your device, and put it back in. Plug in the BB and IMMEDIATELY click the "next" button - here's where you want to make sure the port shows USB: UNKNOWN.

Hirap bang intindihin?
Ok ganito buksan ang back cover ng blackberry at tanggalin ang battery (hayaan lang naka ON ang blackberry phone) pagkatanggal ng battery ikabit agad .... yun lang..dali lang diba.

If it shows the PIN, you were too slow. Try again.
pag humingi sya ng pin ulitin mo lang kasi baka mabagal ka..

Basically, you're loading an OS from the bottom up. There is no "backup/restore" available for this. You'll lose everything on the device.

Ngayon pwede kna makapag update ng blackberry mo kasi naka OS "stealth" kana.

Tried and tested by me using windows XP sp2
gamit kong phone is blackberry curve 8520

yang sinasabi mo is ung service book na mkikita sa options>advanced options?

New information has obviously since come out. Unfortunately OS 6 takes up about 280MB memory. As you know, the Storm2 only had 256MB. This is why there should be a Storm2 Odin refresh that will have 512MB memory. Devices with out a touchscreen only use about 180MB of memory with OS 6. This is why the 9700, 9650, and 9100/9105 should all get OS 6.

The first day of WES 2010 has been a great start to what should be a very informative week. We recently brought you even more leaked details on the features of OS 6.0, which truly sound like RIM is working in the right direction. Now, we’ve learned details on which devices will receive OS 6.0 support.

All current unannounced BlackBerry devices such as the Clamshell 9670, Storm Slider (9800?), and potentially a Storm3 will all launch with OS 6.0. The Atlas 8980 and Kepler 9300 will most likely still release with only OS 5.0.
