If you remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running then that's normal. Better tell-tale signs are smoke coming out of the tell pipe especially bluish smoke which means burning oil while white smoke usually means burning coolant the head gasket might be leaking. If it's a turbo engine then the smoke can be either coming from the engine or the turbo. The surefire way is to have compression and leak down test.
