2 Types of Anti-oxidants
Exogenous – derived from food sources, vitamins
Endogenous – produced by the body
ex: Co-enzyme Q-10 (Co-Q10)
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)
Catalase (CAT)
GLUTATHIONE is the most powerful among Endogenous antioxidants

Main Functions of Glutathione
ANTI-OXIDANT: Body’s premier neutralizer of all types of free radicals
IMMUNE SYSTEM ENHANCER: protects and regulates immune cells
DETOXIFIER: One of the primary ways the body eliminates toxic environmental chemicals

Significance of GLUTATHIONE "The Guardian of the Cell"
MASTER Anti-oxidant in each Cell
MASTER Anti-inflammatory in each Cell
MASTER Detoxifier inside each Cell
Primary Detoxifier of Heavy Metals
Chelator – 50% as effective as oral chelation in getting rid of Mercury

HIGHER GLUTATHIONE LEVELS REDUCE MUSCLE INFLAMMATION AND FATIGUE

If you’re an athlete and you’re serious about performing at a high level, then you can’t afford to ignore your glutathione levels. Glutathione (or GSH) plays a fundamental role as your body’s master antioxidant in improving how long you’re able to be active before tiring. The higher your levels of GSH, the longer it’ll take before you become fatigued.

The field of study on the impact of GSH on performance has grown greatly over the past several years. The Journal of Applied Physiology alone has over 200 articles that study the effects of improved GSH levels on performance. Overwhelmingly, they have found that supplementing with glutathione-enhancing products has a positive effect on recovery from exercise and exertion.

One of the earlier studies in 1998 conducted by L.C. Lands, V.L. Grey, and A.A. Smountas demonstrated that higher levels of GSH reduces the levels of oxidative stress that forms in muscles – a condition that results in strenuous muscular contractions and fatigue. Their findings showed that proper supplementation to improve GSH levels resulted in “greater power” and “increased the amount of work” subjects could perform during a given task.

A later study conducted by I. Medved et al. demonstrated that enhanced GSH availability in well-trained individuals resulted in improved gains in periods of prolonged exercise. Another study performed just a few years ago by F. Ferreira and M.B. Reid found that pre-treating with GSH enhancing supplements “improves performance of limb and respiratory muscles during fatigue protocols and extends time to task failure during volitional exercise.”

Simply put – increased glutathione levels allows you to perform at a higher level for longer periods of time and allows you to recover faster. Whether you’re working out regularly, adventuring on the weekends, or playing sports at an elite level you need to supplement your diet with products that enhance glutathione.

Glutathione (GSH
)

The following monograph includes a general summary overview of Glutathione (GSH) followed by a very detailed, technical overview.

Introduction
Glutathione is considered to be the most powerful, most versatile, and most important of the body’s self generated antioxidants. Among glutathione’s many important properties are:

Is found in almost all living cells. The liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, and the lens and cornea, have the highest concentrations in the body.
It is a powerful antioxidant and thus neutralizes free radicals and prevents their formation
Important role in immune function via white blood cell production and is one of the most potent antiviral agents known
It is one of the strongest anti-cancer agents manufactured by the body,
Glutathione is able to reduce oxidized Vitamin C and Vitamin E back to their unoxidized state,
It is used by the liver to detoxify many toxins including formaldehyde, acetaminophen, benzpyrene and many other compounds and plays a key role in Phase I and Phase II detoxification reactions
It is an antioxidant necessary for the protection of proteins; is involved in nucleic acid synthesis and plays a role in DNA repair,
It maintains the cellular redox potential
Glutathione levels decrease with age. It is involved in cellular differentiation and slows the aging process
Protects the integrity of red blood cells
Glutathione is involved in maintaining normal brain function.

Metabolism
Glutathione is synthesized in the body from 3 amino acids:
Cysteine, glutamine and glycine. Cysteine is one of the sulfur containing amino acids used for the synthesis of glutathione, which is very critical in detoxification. N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is the rate limiting amino acid for the production of glutathione within the cells of the body, has mucolytic properties, and is a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier. Some research indicates that NAC is more readily absorbed into certain cells of the body than glutathione and is therefore an excellent synergist with glutathione. The thiol group is the active part of the molecule which serves as a reducing agent to prevent oxidation of tissues.

Reduced Glutathione: glutathione acts as one of the major detoxifiers in the body, but it must be in the reduced form to work properly. Sometimes glutathione will be listed on the label of a product, however it wont be specifically listed as being reduced. The unreduced form is much cheaper and isn’ t metabolically active. Riboflavin, niacinamide, selenium, lipoic acid and glutathione reductase are all essential cofactors for generating reduced glutathione. Once the cysteine moieties become oxidized, they combine to form
cystine. Cystine taken by itself is poorly absorbed.

Glutathione peroxidase is another compound which is involved in detoxification against peroxides and other xenobiotics. It is synthesized from selenium and cysteine.

Therapeutics Detoxification

Heavy metal toxicity including mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium:
Common toxins that glutathione may help protect against are car exhaust, cigarette smoke, aspirin and alcohol (Marz, p. 78, 1997)
Pesticide and industrial chemical exposure
Steroids
Bacterial toxins (Clostridia difficile)
Pharmaceuticals (very long list that need to be detoxified by the liver) (Marz, p. 79, 1997)
Immune enhancement: 1-3 g q.d. This is especially effective against clostridium in the GI. It helps prevent translocation
Psoriasis
Diabetes mellitus: Especially in ketosis as DM patients will generally excrete increased amounts of sulfur containing amino acids.
Liver disease including cirrhosis and fatty liver disease caused by alcohol: Studies show mild effects at large doses
Ulcers intestinal or stomach: In patients with stomach ulcers low levels of GSH have been found.

Other very important uses:

Aspirin or phenacetin overdose (useful for rheumatoid arthritis patients or chronic pain sufferers)
Hematological conditions: myelofibrosis, acute leukemia, chronic myelocytic leukemia, lymphoma, polycythemia vera
Alcoholism
Before ionizing radiation therapy
Cataracts
Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimers, ALS, MS and other neurologic conditions including Autism/Pervasive, Developmental Delay
Chronic kidney failure

FRUIT JUICE AS HARMFUL AS SODA?

We all know that soda and energy drinks are bad for our children because of their high amounts of caffeine, sugar and other additives. But, did you know that fruit juice can be just as bad?

A recent report by the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity found that beverage companies aggressively market their products to children, and often try to hide the unhealthy content of their drinks. Here’s a disturbing finding from the study:

“Researchers also found that an 8-ounce serving of a typical fruit drink has 110 calories and 7 teaspoons of sugar–the same amount found in an 8-ounce serving of a full-calorie soda or energy drink. However, nutrition-related claims on fruit drink packages may mislead parents into thinking these beverages are healthier than full-calorie sodas. Overall, sugary drinks are the top source of calories in teens’ diets.”

As troubling as these findings are, they aren’t new. The Los Angeles Times reported back in 2009 that fruit juice contains equal or greater amounts of sugar and calories than soda. Even worse, the use of fructose in fruit drinks rather than pure sugar results in higher amounts of fat produced by the liver – creating a higher risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. In 2011, CBS news did a report on how juice boxes which are marketed towards children contain high levels of sugar.

Even juice not marketed as “snacks” can be problematic, last year several researchers took a very serious look at apple juice for its high levels of sugar and troubling levels of arsenic. As mentioned in this story from the Chicago Tribune, while the exact levels of dangerous arsenic in apple juice is still under study, pediatricians recommend that neither kids nor adults drink juice at all.

SPORTS DRINKS ARE A WASTE OF YOUR MONEY

A recent article at Yahoo Health reviews several recent studies by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) about the bogus claims of many sports-drinks companies.

The bottom line? For years sports-drinks companies have been selling everyone a “need” for performance-enhancing drinks, encouraging people to drink sports drinks even when they’re not thirsty! The claim was that if you hydrated before a performance with a sports drink then you’re performance and recovery would improve.

The results? Comparing people who drank sports drinks at moderate and heavy timed rates versus when they were thirsty found “no significant differences in core body temperatures or finishing time.”

CYSTEINE SUPPLEMENTATION REDUCES AGE RELATED ILLNESSES

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that oxidative stress in older people increases largely due to the diminished synthesis of glutathione in the body. The comparison between eight younger subjects (20-40 years old) and eight older subjects (60-75 years old) found that the older group had 24.4% lower concentrations of cysteine, one of the amino acids that make up glutathione.

This is problematic because glutathione deficiency due to aging has shown to increase the amount of oxidative stress in the bodies, which has been linked to several age-related illnesses. Giving the older group oral supplements of cysteine was found to be effective in combating their reduced ability to synthesize glutathione and restored their glutathione levels to those comparable to the younger adults. This increase was associated with a “significant reduction” in oxidative stress and oxidant damage suffered by the older adults.

Simply put, older individuals need to supplement their diet with cysteine to combat the degenerative effects of aging. Seniors should consider using more effective means of supplementation in order to increase the efficacy their glutathione production. A product like RiboCeine combines ribose and cysteine, nutrients that are naturally occurring in humans, to enter the bloodstream in order to promote the creation of glutathione in a natural and direct manner.
