Short Story The Haunted Shortcut [Horror]

The sun had set hours ago, and the moon was high in the sky when Sarah finally decided to take the shortcut home. She had always been told not to venture down the old, abandoned road, but she was feeling brave and the temptation of saving a few minutes on her walk was too great to resist.

As she walked, the trees seemed to close in around her, blocking out the light of the moon and casting deep shadows on the ground. The leaves rustled ominously in the breeze and Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.

She quickened her pace, trying to convince herself that it was just her imagination playing tricks on her. But as she rounded a bend, she came face to face with a figure standing in the middle of the road.

It was a woman, or at least it seemed to be at first glance. But as Sarah got closer, she realized that something was off about her. Her skin was deathly pale and her eyes seemed to glow in the darkness.

"Who are you?" Sarah asked, trying to keep the tremble out of her voice.

The woman didn't answer, just stood there staring at Sarah with a sinister grin on her face. Sarah turned and ran, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the woman's footsteps behind her, getting closer and closer.

Sarah was sure she was going to be caught, but just as she thought all hope was lost, she saw a glimmer of light in the distance. She pushed herself harder, ignoring the pain in her legs and the stitch in her side.

Finally, she burst through the trees and onto the main road, panting and covered in sweat. She looked back, but the woman was nowhere to be seen.

Sarah didn't stop running until she reached the safety of her home. She locked the door behind her and collapsed on the floor, shaking with fear. She knew she would never take that shortcut again.

Sarah tried to put the incident on the abandoned road out of her mind, but she couldn't shake the feeling that the pale woman was still out there, watching her. She started having nightmares about the encounter and found herself jumping at every little noise.

She tried to tell her friends and family about what had happened, but they just laughed it off as her imagination getting the best of her. Sarah began to wonder if she had just imagined the whole thing.

But then, strange things started happening. Sarah would find objects moved or misplaced in her house when she knew she had left them in a different place. She would catch glimpses of a pale figure in the corner of her eye, only for it to disappear when she turned to look.

Sarah couldn't take it anymore. She had to find out what was going on. She went back to the abandoned road, determined to confront the woman and get some answers.

As she walked, the same feeling of dread washed over her. The trees seemed to close in around her and the moon was hidden behind a thick layer of clouds, plunging the road into darkness.

But Sarah was determined. She kept walking until she saw the woman standing in front of her, that same sinister grin on her face.

"Who are you?" Sarah demanded. "Why are you doing this to me?"

The woman cocked her head to the side, as if considering Sarah's question. "I am the embodiment of your fears," she said in a voice that sent shivers down Sarah's spine. "I feed on the terror of those who dare to venture down this road."

Sarah's heart pounded in her chest. She knew she had to get out of there, but her legs felt like lead.

"Why me?" she asked, trying to keep the tremble out of her voice.

The woman chuckled. "Because you were brave enough to come back. You have a strong spirit, Sarah. It will make for a delicious meal."

Sarah finally found the strength to turn and run. She could hear the woman's laughter echoing behind her as she fled down the road. She didn't stop until she reached the safety of her home.

She locked the door behind her and collapsed on the floor, shaking with fear. She knew she could never go down that road again. The pale woman was out there, waiting for her next victim.

Sarah tried to go about her life as normally as possible, but she couldn't shake the feeling that the pale woman was still out there, watching her. She avoided the abandoned road at all costs and made sure to always stay in well-lit, crowded areas.

But despite her precautions, Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that she was being followed. She would catch glimpses of a pale figure in the corner of her eye and find objects moved or misplaced in her house.

She knew she had to do something to stop the pale woman once and for all. She sought out a local occult expert and told them everything that had happened.

The expert listened intently and then nodded. "I know how to stop her," they said. "But it won't be easy."

They explained that the pale woman was a powerful entity, feeding on the fear of those who ventured down the abandoned road. The only way to stop her was to face her head on and confront her with all the bravery and strength Sarah had within her.

Sarah knew it wouldn't be easy, but she also knew it was the only way. She gathered all the courage she had and returned to the abandoned road, determined to put an end to the pale woman's reign of terror.

As she approached the woman, Sarah could feel her fear and doubts trying to take over. But she pushed them aside and stood tall, meeting the woman's glowing eyes with a steady gaze.

"I'm not afraid of you," Sarah said, her voice strong and steady. "I won't let you control me anymore."

The woman cocked her head to the side, studying Sarah. For a moment, Sarah was sure she had made a mistake. But then the woman let out a shriek and dissipated into thin air, as if she had never been there at all.

Sarah let out a sigh of relief and turned to leave the abandoned road behind for good. She knew that she would always carry the memories of her encounter with the pale woman, but she also knew that she had the strength and courage to face any challenge that came her way.
