Please share your linux experience.......

Major Linux Distributions
Dont konw which Linux distribution to choose? This Overview from Distrowatch.com may
help you decide what to choose.

Top Ten Linux Distributions

Im using LinuxMint 17 KDE edition, LinuxMint LMDE edition, Kali linux at Quirky Linux on my Lenovo Ideapad s10-3s
multi-booted with GRUB......
Im also testing Android-x86, Slacko and LFS releases.

If you want to know more about different linux distributions,
get in to the Linux World and dive at this site: distrowatch

There are different flavors of linux for different tasks and different niches.

For me, Ive been using LinuxMint 17 as my day-to-day Operating System.
Ive used it when I was still a volunteer admin for a certain skills develeopment school recognized by TESDA.
Which means to say that, Linux MInt was able to cater our daily needs, from simple paper works to creating tarpaulins.

On my own, I think, one of the major advantages of Linux over Windows are:

1. MORE SECURED COMPARED TO WINDOWS AND MAC.
Linux is less affected with viruses and malwares. In fact, its very rare to have Linux desktops to have
viruses screwing the system. On my 3 years experience with linux, I never had problems pertaining to
infections of malicious codes. And Im usually using my Linux to download windows applications, specially, cracked softwares then scan it with ClamAV before transfering it to my windows partition.

This thread had received comments majorly concerning about this topic.
For further references on how secure linux is, I decided to provide some links:

2. LOW MAINTENANCE.
Linux filesystems like ext4, xfs, reiserfs, etc. doesnt need to be DEFRAGMENTED.
You dont need to run any ANTIVIRUS SCAN.
You dont need to do any REGISTRY CLEANING.

3. GOOD SOFTWARE UPDATE MANAGEMENT.
On Windows, running windows update only updates the system. You have to manually update your
downloaded applications. On linux, running system update will also update all of your favorite applications
to its newest and safest version available.

4. FLEXIBLE AND HIGHLY CONFIGURABLE
With Linux, you are not limited. You may change the layout of your
desktop even to the point of making it look like Mac.
If you have an old computer that is no longer supported by the latest
version of Windows available, you may use different Linux distro
specially created for this like Sparky Linux.
Or if for some reasons, you need to have a portable Operating System that
will fit on your tiny 4GB flash drive, then you may use Puppy Linux.
If you need to learn how to hack for offensive security purposes, then you may
use Kali.
Theres a lot of different linux distributions out there that will serve any
of your specific needs.

5. CAN RUN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS
Yes! If you still need your windows applications running on linux, you may do so.
Just install Wine and you can run any windows applications
on Linux.

6. EASY TO FIND APPLICATIONS
On linux, you dont have to search google for Linux Programs or games. Linux has Software managers
where you can use to look for applications to install.

7. ITS FREE!
Yes! You dont have to pay for anything. Its all for free. Like using the google search engine.
If your wondering how the hell this people could spend their time programming just for free,
its because, actually, their earning from it. Just imagine how google and android became big things
offering free services.

Linux has a ton of applications as counterparts for non-free windows applications.
Most of us spend our time searching for crack softwares leading us to unsecure grounds and downloading malwares
and tons of viruses. Why not use Linux instead? If you need Adobe PhotoShop but cant buy it, why go for malicious cracks
if you may use Gimp. Why search for virus-infested cracks of MS OFFICE if you may use Open Office or Libre Office.

Im urging many people to use Linux thats why i made this thread.

Nagmamahal,
Linux Kali

Re: Bakit ako gagamit ng linux? anu ba advantage nito at ano ba ang mapapal

I haven't tried Linux.
So, if ever I'd like to use Linux, what would I download? Do I need to reformat my laptop? Can I install using USB?
My Laptop is Toshiba Satellite C50-A166 with 2Gb ram. Currently running on Windows 7 Ultimate OS.
What recommendations you can give if I wanted to have faster browsing experience or for gaming or for both preferences?

Tanong lang regarding sa statement na to "Linux has no virus and is not affected by any viruses or malwares."

:nice:

Re: Bakit ako gagamit ng linux? anu ba advantage nito at ano ba ang mapapal

Lahat ng sinabi ni TS ay tama. Maganda ang linux in terms of speed and security. Marami din kayong pwede pag pili-an na desktop environments tulad ng KDE, GNOME ( For High End PC ) and XFCE, LXDE, Openbox ( Low End PC ) at marami pa. :)

Nga pala I'm using LXLE kasi sa Ubuntu supported na agad ang drivers ng printer and I want to explore more the Linux system. :)

Sa dami ng LINUX type or name or whatever you called it, padgating sa driver, malaking sakit sa ulo di ba?

buti nalang dual OS yun PC don (buti nalang)

kasi almost all applications sa windows, may linux counterpart.... and im referring to "windows applications"
for daily needs like office suites, programming, wed development etc.

Its better to learn to use linux applications than to run windows applications thru wine.
After all, its not that hard to learn new applications, parang learning how to do fbt lang yan.

Pero, if your refering to games like NBA, DOTA, etc, you can perfectly use WIne for this purpose.
This are apps that doesnt have versions for Linux.
Also, there are some nice games for Linux that you may check like warzone.

Regarding dual-booting, hmmmm....
Recommend ko, if your just new to using Linux, you should better dual-boot first.
If your already used-to and comfortable using Linux, then it would the time for you to think again if
you'll remove windows.

Regarding Zorin-OS,
ndi ko pa to ntry pero this Linux distribution is good for those new to linux kasi
Its desktop interface is very similar to Windows systems and is really meant to be used
by linux newbies....
Good find.......

Hmmmm....anu ba pinagkaiba ng 64bit at 32bit computers?
ANg pinagkaiba lang naman nyan, codes (source codes) were compiled on
a 32bit processor, w/c means na compiling these codes on 64bit processor-powered computera will yield
the same software. Ang pagkakaiba lang, drivers compiled on 32bit computers are binary compatible with 32bit computers only
while drivers compiled on 64bit computers are binary compatible with 64bit computers only. But they are the same driver for the same device.

Almost all Linux Distributions have 64bit versions available. And here is one for you to try:
A 64bit version of Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon Edition.

And yes, almost Linux Distributions offers (i mean all installers they provide) Live Installers.
This are installers that can run without requiring installation.
This kind of installers are really meant for users to test first new releases of Linux Distributions before installing it.

And here's one of the Major Linux Distribution that is highly focused on producing
i686- and x86_64 (64bit) optimised system:

We are on the same ground, my netbook also has 2gb of RAM,
If you need faster browsing expereince, you should better find a better internet service provider.

Here are choices for Linux Distributions created mainly for gaming:
Gaming Linux Distributions from DistroWatch.com

Personally, I'll recommend Linux Mint 17.

You may choose Linux Mint 17 MATE Edition if you want to run many games since you only
have 2GB of RAM (But you didnt mention youre GPU). Mate takes less RAM compared to other
edtions of Linux Mint.

Though, even though running only 2GB of RAM, I still prefer Linux Mint 17 KDE edition. Thia
ia the main Edition that im using for a long time and Im happy with it.
You may use the Wide Collection of Software from KDE to help you with your browsing needs.
Here are some softwares from KDE that might supplement your browsing expereince:

Please share your linux experience.......

Just to comment on the following:

1. SECURED
- We cannot state a general statement that Linux (GNU/LInux) has no virus and is not affected by any viruses or malwares. I've heard before that there's also a virus in Linux.
Example:

"Koobface is a multi-platform computer worm that originally targeted users of the networking websites like Facebook, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and email websites such as Google Mail, Yahoo Mail, and AOL Mail.), MySpace, hi5, Bebo, Friendster and Twitter. In the later versions it has stopped using those websites because they improved their protection. Koobface is designed to infect Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, *but can also infect Linux*." (kindly check this link : http://www.neowin.net/news/a-history-of-viruses-on-linux)

3. GOOD SOFTWARE UPDATE MANAGEMENT.
- Not All. It depends on the package management. As an example, some distros are modular like in my case Slax. Puppy has it also (SFS extension if I'm not mistakeN). Some apps are also distributed as static binaries.

4. FLEXIBLE AND HIGHLY CONFIGURABLE
- Distros that are best example for the old computers, are those who use lighweight desktop environments/window managers like LXDE/XFCE and JWM/FLWM/ICEWM (very lighweight). My Wary Puppy runs only on 1GB flashdrive w/ office suite, WINE, webserver/PHP and my favorite and VB6 alternative - RapidQ.

5. CAN RUN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS
- Not all. And there's no guarantee that it will run 100%. So it's better to test first.

6. EASY TO FIND APPLICATIONS
- Not all distros have a good software package management. These things depend on their repositories. You will be lucky if they have a large repositories and if a distro can recognize one's format/extension. As an example, old Slax can recognize tgz extension (Slackware). Another one, TinyCore can recognize deb extension (Debian). Conversion of these extensions to their native format are done manually.

7. ITS FREE!
"If your wondering how the hell this people could spend their time programming just for free,
its because, actually, their earning from it. Just imagine how google and android became big things
offering free services."
- There's 50/50 mentality here. Free has two meanings in FOSS community. One is liberty ("free speech" as they say) and the other one is price ("free beer" as they say also). Richard Stallman is not earning from what he's doing as Google.

Sa dami ng LINUX type or name or whatever you called it, padgating sa driver, malaking sakit sa ulo di ba?

Im happy for most responses on this thread and It seems that most enthusiast are more concerned on security and some, the functiionality.
As for your response, I edited my post on the 1st page of this thread. I also added some links regarding how secure linux is and added also added the link you provided.

This thread is becoming much more educational, aside from being informative. Thanks to all your response.
