Do you really think that I'm not aware of this basic semi-factual information (in bold) in your post?

Marcos was nearing the end of his second term, of which there was already growing discontent for his administration among the public and he didn’t want to go out of the limelight yet so decided to go extra constitutional and declared martial law. And that’s how things got to this point.

The communist threat you're speaking of was not even critical in the Philippines during Marcos time. In fact, there were only about 60 NPA members (who were only remnants of the Huks, the original communist movement in the Philippines) in 1969 when it started its operation, and their number rose to mere 350 in 1971, the year in which martial law was declared. There was absolutely NO communist threat large enough to topple the government during Marcos' time. It was only exaggerated by Marcos regime to provide excuse to declare martial law.

https://web.stanford.edu/group/mappingmilitants/cgi-bin/groups/view/149

http://www.britannica.com/topic/New-Peoples-Army

The height of communist uprising was never during Marcos time but in the 1950s. The armed communist group back then was the Hukbalahap, the predecessor of the NPA. but they were eventually defeated by Ramon Magsaysay without imposing martial law or tolerating military abuse.

The only plausible way for the communists to take over the government in the Philippines was if Ninoy Aquino became the president and actually let the Communist Party of the Philippines run for election since there were only very few of them during that time.

Marcos declared martial law only for ONE reason and that is to strengthen his hold on power and remove his political opponents from the equation. I'll say it again. There's no justification for martial law and no justification for one man to rule the Philippines for 21 years. All justifications were bogus and incidents were only created to buttress the argument for martial law.

Sorry but your failed attempt to whitewash the history of martial law and justify Marcos' indefensible actions and even paint him as a 'victim' is pathetic and disgusting.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear in my previous post. Let me elaborate.

I emphasized that we need to look at the political realities of the time when Marcos chose to go the martial law way. This I realize is one area where most political analysts are amiss, one that unfortunately feeds the minds of those who attempt to express their views on the events, as you do, and a great many others. In fairness, however, I recall some works that got it right as far as why Marcos went the way of this momentously contentious period of Philippine history.

There is a school of thought that like many previous presidents before him, Marcos would have been content to step aside and let the normal course of political events take its course. He was losing the deadline to extend his term through the Constitutional Convention of the time, but the political situation, both domestically and internationally, was ripe for many possibilities.

You made the point that the number of the communist faction, rebels, in the Philippines was not at the figure that justify the declaration of Martial Law; that the height was at its most critical in the 1950s. Numbers, however, are deceiving. Misleading. In the blink of an eye, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Korea were engulfed by communists who at first were seen as not having the numbers to effectively launch antigovernment campaigns. And the countries paid dearly for it. Remember, too, that even Mohammed and Maurya managed to storm enemy strongholds alone or with the most trivial number of lieutenants. So the number of factional membership is not a reliable yardstick to measure the threat of any militant force. But leaving these thoughts behind, observe that so far you are looking at the situation from a purely domestic point of view.

What is absent in your account is the weight of US position, a power supremely interested in the events unfolding in Asia and the Philippines specifically, at the international level. AS the self-appointed last defender of anticommunist bloc in the world, it knew that the Philippines might just be its last chance of staving off the Commies (communists), both of the Soviet and Maoist persuasion, in the region. Again I mention how like dominoes the other Southeast Asian countries of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia had fallen to the communists.

What they saw was a post-Marcos Philippines headed by no other than Ninoy Aquino. And Ninoy to the Americans was perceived as a pure-blooded communist. What to do?

We are not privy to the minutes of top player meetings at this point, but all the likelihood points towards the US prevailing upon Marcos to stay on as president at whatever cost. And you forgot one other player: the Church which, fearful of the commies, must have entreated Marcos to stay on with its support. Now here is another reality looking Marcos in the face at this time: Marcos must have also seen that if he stepped down, Washington have no choice but initiate a coup and install a military junta (as they did in South American countries) if only to forestall the inevitable, that of a Ninoy presidency. Indeed, if his military background be any guide, Marcos himself must have shared the same apprehensions.

If you were Marcos, it was hell either way. On the other hand, myriad opportunities appeared to present themselves concurrent with a decision to enforce martial law.

Lastly I must make it clear that I have no need to whitewash any period of Philippine history. Why should I? I am not a member of any party. My interest lies in giving a fighting chance to my daughters and sons who would someday have their own. That certainly would not happen by resorting to unguided, biased passions. And perhaps unlike you, I have seen the sufferings of this country FIRSTHAND, from the uncharted mountains of Mindanao where the cold reality of bloodshed had taken some of my kin and family. Could you claim the same?

You forgot about the part where you could die when people framed you for being an activist.
I guess you really like to cherry-pick events during Marcos' regime.

And you forgot about the part where you could die when people framed you for being fervent anticommunist. I guess you really like to cherrypick events during the Marcos regime.

See, it works both ways. ;)

Don't look at me, I aint the one making lists.

This is true. But the danger and torture was worst and far bigger for being an activist.

Ninoy Aquino:
They…placed me in a box. I had only my brief and my t-shirt. I refused to eat because I thought they were poisoning me. There was nothing in the room, barely nothing. And I had nothing to do but twiddle my thumb, and for the first time in my life I heard the ticking of every second, and I was counting every second into minutes, and as the minutes marched into hours, and hours into days and days into weeks, I knew what loneliness meant.

Roland Simbulan:
I was almost unconscious eh dahil nung sinuntok ako ulit it was so hard

Other Methods of Torture during the Marcos Years

Electric Shock

—one of the frequently used techniques. Usually, the electric wires were attached to fingers and the genitalia of the victim, as inflicted on Charlie Revilla Palma and Wilfredo Hilao. Sometimes, wires were attached to the arms and the head, just like what happened to Romeo Tolio. Other victims were Reynaldo Guillermo, Alejandro Arellano, Victor Quinto, Pedro de Guzman, Jr., Reynaldo Rodriguez, Julius Giron, Armando Teng, Santiago Alonzo, Romeo Bayle and Agaton Topacio.
San Juanico Bridge
—the victim lies between two beds and if his/her body falls or sags, the victim will be beaten. This was just one of the many tortures inflicted on José Lacaba and Bonifacio Ilagan.
Truth Serum
—administered at the V. Luna General Hospital. It made José Lacaba “talk drunkenly.” It was also administered to Victor Quinto.
Russian Roulette
—the victim is forced to aim a revolver with a bullet at his/her own head and then pull the trigger. This was used to further terrify Rev. Cesar Taguba and Carlos Centenera while being subjected to other tortures.
Beating
—another favorite technique where a group of soldiers would beat with “fists, kicks and karate blows” manacled victims. Almost all those who were tortured where subjected to this beating, among them Julius Giron, Macario Tiu, Eugenio Magpantay, Joseph Gatus, Rev. Cesar Taguba, Reynaldo Guillermo, Alejandro Arellano, Charley Palma, Victor Quinto, Pedro de Guzman, Jr., Reynaldo Rodriguez, Ma. Cristina Verzola, Julius Giron, Armando Teng, Romeo Bayle, Agaton Topacio, Reynaldo Ilao and Ramon Casiple.
Pistol-Whipping
—beating with rifle butts; one of the techniques endured by Reynaldo Guillermo, Roberto Sunga, Joseph Gatus and Nathan Quimpo.
Water Cure
—another favorite technique. Huge amounts of water would be forced through into the victim’s mouth, and by beating would be forced out. This was applied to Guillermo Ponce de Leon, Alfonso Abzagado and Andrew Ocampo.

Strangulation

—Done by hand, electric wire and steel bar to Carlos Centenera, and for two months his speech was impaired. Others who claimed to be strangulated were Willie Tatanis, Juan Villegas and Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Cigar Burns
—bonus you would get under torture. Received by Marcelino Tolam, Jr., Philip Limjoco, Charley Palma, Ma. Cristina Verzola and Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Flat Iron burns
—Despite being old in his fifties, Cenon Sembrano’s foot was heated with a flat iron. His foot became swollen and infected.
Pepper Torture
—Meynardo Espeleta’s bonus was a “concentrated peppery substance placed on his lips and genitals.”
Animal Treatment
—victims are manacled and caged like beasts. For three days, Leandro Manalo was caged inside a toilet handcuffed and blindfolded. Because of the experience he got viral hepatitis. For long periods of time, manacles were not removed from Alexander Arevalo, Manuel Daez, Marcelo Gallarin, Romualdo Inductivo, Faustino Samonte and Rodolfo Macasalabang, even if they ate, discharged their waste, took baths or slept. Food was given to them as if they were dogs, “shoved under the iron grilles.” And they ate without even knowing what the food was because there were no lights in their cell. Inductivo, despite his old age, was mercilessly slapped and electrocuted under torture. Rev. Cesar Taguba was made to drink his urine. And Monico Atienza, in his nakedness was threatened to be fed to dogs. Two of the many cases would best illustrate how many of these techniques were combined to produce cruelty at its worst.
Peter Villaseñor
was brought to a camp in Bataan where he was tortured for nine nights and nine days. While he was hung naked from the ceiling, soldiers would flick his genitals and walis tambo was inserted into his urinary tract. Thumbtacks were also inserted into his fingertips. Bayonets were placed in his elbows and his mouth. Naked, he was made to sit on three blocks of ice. Electric shock was applied to his toe and his genitalia. A stone was knocked repeatedly on his knees. While his head and stomach were beaten, water drops were forced into his nose Magsaysay 1999).
Satur Ocampo, director of a workers’ union of a newspaper, was brought to a safe house. Manacled and blindfolded, soldiers poured cola drinks on him while being electrocuted, so as to cause more pain. His ears, nose, esophagus and head were slapped. His nipples and genitalia were burned. He was forced to eat manure and was threatened to be castrated or be killed. Brig. Gen. Thomas P. Diaz, First Police Constabulary Zone Commander, who didn’t believe the torture exclaimed, “My God!” when he was shown marks on Ocampo’s body (Aquino Jr., 1984, 2000, 100).
V.

Sexual Torture:

Currently, she was the executive director Claimants 1081
, a group that filed human rights violations against the Marcoses (Magsaysay 1999).
Judy Taguiwalo
,
a student activist and community organizer was brought to a military office in Iloilo. She was stripped naked as she was subjected to water torture. The next day, she fought a soldier attempting to mash her and make her sit on a block of ice. She still felt lucky she wasn’t raped. She now teaches at University of the Philippines (Azarcon-dela Cruz 1999, 4).
Fe Mangahas
, a historian and an active member of the faculty union of the University of the East, was arrested along with her husband-poet, Roger. Although she was just detained for one night, her husband stayed 19 months more. She described that night in Camp Aguinaldo where “people [were] walking around like zombies.” She confirmed the existence of a building called the “white house” where screams of women molested were regularly heard. To her, the thought of how long martial law would last was very difficult (Azarcon-dela Cruz 1999, 4).
Isabelita Guillermo
was arrested with her husband Reynaldo. She unwillingly watched her husband’s torture. Pregnant, she was threatened with rape and abortion. She was still under military custody when her child was born (Aquino Jr., 1984, 2000, 96).
Erlinda Taruc-Co
, wife of a political detainee, was told that they would be fine in detention with her 5-year old son. The next morning they were separated from each other. While “blindfolded and handcuffed to a metal bed,” she was beaten and was molested. She suffered this for twenty-five days (Aquino Jr., 1984, 2000, 101, 102, Canoy 1980, 70).
Lualhati Roque
, twenty-five years old, was “sexually abused and tortured” by constabulary elements. Despite her rheumatic heart ailment, she wasn’t permitted to rest or given medical attention (Aquino Jr., 1984, 2000, 102)

Maria Elena-Ang

was electrocuted, water cured, deprived of sleep, pistol-whipped and was subjected to “sexual indignities”. She was threatened that her relatives would also be harmed (Aquino Jr., 1984, 2000, 104).

[list of torture methods/victims....]

Yes, but perhaps only because the government side had all the state apparatus to indulge all their ingenious torture schemes. But this: imagine how it would be if the tables were turned and the rebels were now in government and going after their enemies. The Reds and even the Western powers were good denouncing the ghastly methods of Hitler’s concentration camps, until later documents revealed how the gulags and the Western prison systems themselves were not lacking in this respect.

Well documented experiments by Milgram and Zimbardo et al. all show that humans from both sides of any torture system are equally capable of descending to the lowest of animal levels when given the chance.

All of these remind humanity that anyone of us is not beyond any chance of going down the lowest level of depravity when the occasion arises. For all of us consuming the facts through current media, the danger is becoming desensitized to it all, which would be regrettable for all posterity. We must endeavor to keep these human atrocities in mind while doing all we can to move on and improve ourselves and the rest of society.

And those happened at times where media was at its poorest/biased towards the Marcos side. Imagine if it happened on Ninoy's term. The news would be even bigger.

Easy to lament something that haven't proven yet. Typical marcos supporters style of fabricating facts. Martial law was ordered because of false scenario. And now marcos are here again fabricating facts and non-sense accusations. pls. move-on for the sake of country.

I hope Duterte will be a good president and he will prove me wrong.
Go Philippines!

I am no Leni supporter pero masyadong maaga to say na walang dayaan. i would still vouch for marcos between the two. pero if he cannot accept defeat, then my support is no longer his. di pa nga tapos ang bilangan eh. kahit nga sa senatorial race nagababago ang mga ranking by a few thousand votes.

I'm still hoping marcos would win. pero it is really a close fight.

^ Impressive. But you know what, I have this in my mind: I do not want Bong Bong Marcos to lose because of the father. And I do not want him to win because of the father. Let him make a name for himself. The sins and the greatness of the father should not be passed on and ascribed to the son, which I notice seems to be the mindset of many people. This mindset prevents many of us from truly moving on.

When Marcos defeated then President Diosdado Macapagal in the 1965 election, the country’s foreign debt was merely US7 billion. But when he fled the country after 21 years in power, including 14 year of strongman rule, on widespread allegations of plundering the national coffers, the country’s foreign debt had ballooned to US$25 billion.

“The economy appeared to have improved because he was borrowing from the World Bank so he had money to show, “says Almario, editor of the independent Philippine News Service when the strongman clamped down on all media networks in 1972. He was arrested after military authorities sequestered the PNS, which was later renamed Philippine News Agency to become part of the government information network.

==============

The fact that everybody is throwing curses and insulting at PNoy right now is perhaps PNoy's greatest legacy. There is no more apathy and fear towards the government.

magkocomment lang ako based sa mga nabasa kong comments, "Marcos is the best ever President in Philippine history". WTF! Simple as that.

To be fair.. i'll watch the video and i'll give my reactions then. :)
